The Consumentenbond has compared various dietary supplements. Although their initiative was to give clarity to the consumer, it proved to be not as easy as they thought. The coverage of the Consumers' Association is too simplistic and unsophisticated in some respects. Products are being poorly judged. The consumer is thus incorrectly informed, which we find regrettable.
Each product has a different composition and dosage. If you want to compare price and quality, then you also have to look at the whole composition and not only one active substance of it. Thus contain glucosamine preparations often other supportive ingredients that make the product more expensive. The approach to make general recommendations -also known as Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)- the standard dosage and to give products which contain more or less than this amount a negative review is too short-sighted. Manufacturers can in fact have several reasons to choose a different dosage. It's just what the manufacturer of the product has in mind for his or her product.
A manufacturer may choose a lower dose than the RDA if the food supplement is intended to complement and if a part of the RDA of nutrients from food is also meant to be used. Sometimes a manufacturer will choose the RDA for a higher dose because the product intends create a certain health/bodily reaction or because a target has a higher requirement such as pregnant women. An effective dosage may therefore exceed the generic RDA. In addition, the RDA is based on estimates. The requirements may vary from person to person. The Consumers evaluate the products strictly on the RDA. To provide products that contain more or less than the RDA with negative revies, is a too one-sided approach.
