Valerian (catnip) is a plant that grows in many parts of Europe and Asia. In ancient Greece was valerian been used for its beneficial effects on sleep and mental balance. The name Valeriana is derived from the Latin verb 'paler' what 'in good health' means.
The root of this plant includes GABA, sallow acid unit and valepotriaten. Vale Reen acid and GABA are hydrophilic (water soluble) components of valerian. Valepotriaten are fat soluble. Many valerian preparations do not contain valepotriaten miss and, therefore, a part of the effect. The active substances of plants are often intracellularly. Plant cells, however, are surrounded by sturdy, and indigestible cell walls to humans (cellulose). As a result, it is necessary, by means of extraction to remove the active ingredients from the plant so that it better available for the human body.
