What is boswellia?
Boswellia refers to the dried (gum) resin of the tropical incense tree Boswellia serrata. The resin (syrupy liquid) is released from the tree trunk, if the bark is naturally damaged or incised by man. Boswellia is called a 'gum resin' because it contains both water-soluble (gum) and alcohol-soluble (resin) components. Boswellia has traditionally been used for thousands of years as a powerful, natural remedy for the joints, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. Boswellia (as an extract) has also been popular for decades and promising as a dietary supplement. They are the boswellia acids that are considered to be the most important active substances, of which acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellia acid (AKBA) appears to be the most effective from research. Boswellia extracts are therefore usually standardized at a high content of AKBA (naturally only 2-3% AKBA is contained in boswellia). However, the efficacy of a boswellia extract is not only determined by the content of active substances, but also by the bioavailability of these substances after oral intake. AKBA is relatively poorly recorded. Improving the bioavailability of AKBA ensures greater effectiveness.
The main mechanism of action of boswellia is to regulate the activity of the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP) by the active ingredient AKBA. 5-LOX provides for the synthesis of certain leukotrienes (locally acting tissue hormones) from arachidonic acid. By helping to maintain normal levels of 5-LOX and FLAP, boswellia contributes to healthy cartilage and supports the normal function of the joints.
Boswellia AF from Vitals contains AprèsFlex. This is the new name of a high-quality boswellia extract from producer Laila Nutra. Previously, this same extract was known under the name Aflapin®, as it can also be found in the various scientific publications that support its effectiveness. Laila Nutra is an expert in the development of well-absorbing and fast-acting boswellia extracts. They were already successful with the popular extract 5-Loxin®. Nevertheless, the producer thought that there could still be a profit in the field of the absorption of the active substances in boswellia. By doing tests with various compositions with an emphasis on even greater bioavailability, Laila Nutra has developed the extract AprèsFlex, an improved version of their previous extract 5-Loxin. This next-generation product consists of a boswellia extract (standardized at 20% AKBA) supplemented with a part of the non-volatile oils from the boswellia resin. The addition of these naturally occurring oils turned out to be the golden grip in improving the absorbability and bioavailability of AKBA. Despite the lower percentage of AKBA in AprèsFlex compared to 5-Loxin (20% and 30%, respectively), comparative research indicates that AprèsFlex can be absorbed up to 50% more effectively and even more effectively.
