As a child we all have sometimes chewed: Licorice. The delicious taste is caused by glycyrrhizin, a very sweet substance, where manufacturers of confectionery, and particularly licorice, good use of it. Licorice brewers also use as a flavoring agent in the preparation of their barley beer.
In the France of the 17th century, people already knew Licorice. There were prepared from the root a popular drink called 'coco'. Licorice is native to the Mediterranean region and was first noticed by the ancient Egyptians.
Today we know Licorice root partly because of its protective effect on the stomach wall.
